We call for papers to be submitted to the 30th Australasian Conference on Information Systems (ACIS2019).
ACIS is the premier conference in Australasia for Information Systems. In 2019, ACIS will be hosted by the School of Management, Curtin University in Perth, Western Australia. The event will take place at the Esplanade Hotel in Fremantle from the 9th – 11th December 2019.
Conference Theme: Making the World a Better Place with Information Systems
The discipline of Information Systems arose within the field of Business and Management and the majority of the research in Information Systems today fits well within that field. As research and knowledge in information systems and other disciplines have progressed, businesses have achieved unprecedented levels of productivity and profit. Many of the benefits of these developments have also flowed to the public in terms of employment, new products, lower prices, and taxes paid to government. Similarly, the production of food is at an all-time high and its distribution continues to improve.
However, not every impact of development is bright and beautiful and, in many places, the positive impacts are poorly distributed. Major problems still exist in the world in terms of poverty, hunger, poor health, diminished opportunities for education, and lack of self-determination and self-government.
The United Nations has long recognised these issues. On 21 October 2015, the UN (and all its member states) adopted Resolution 70/1 “Transforming our world: The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development” (http://www.un.org/ga/search/view_doc.asp?symbol=A/RES/70/1&Lang=E). The resolution includes 17 development goals in five main areas: People, Planet, Prosperity, Peace, and Partnership, with specific goals in areas such as ending poverty and hunger, reducing inequality, and ensuring health and wellness, inclusive and quality education, and access to water, sanitation, and energy.
More recently, the Community for Responsible Research in Business and Management (cRRBM) was formed by 24 business schools. To promote and encourage responsible research, cRRBM has put out “a call for actions to transform business and management research toward achieving humanity’s highest aspirations for a better world” (http://rrbm.network/).
Information systems can be developed, deployed, and used in myriad ways to transform and impact positively on the world for everyone, not just for businesses, for their owners, or for regions of relative wealth. The theme of this conference is to explore new ways to use information systems and information technology to improve social conditions and all of the areas that doing so entails, including reducing poverty, hunger, war, and oppression and improving the quality of working life, health, education, equality, freedom, and emancipation.
In line with Geoff Walsham’s 2012 paper “Are We Making the World a Better Place with Information Systems?” and the recent Information Systems Journal special issue call for papers on “Responsible IS Research for a Better World”, we call for papers in all areas of IS research, but especially for papers that address this year’s conference theme of “Making the World a Better Place with Information Systems”. Papers in this theme may take many research approaches and address any of the myriad themes on how IS does, can and could contribute in the future, or critiquing research in IS and their use in practice.
